Our world is on the brink of a massive transformation, a shift so profound that it will redefine the very fabric of our society. We are standing at the precipice of a post-labor economy, a jobless society, an era where automation and artificial intelligence will reshape the future of work.
This looming reality sparks fear and uncertainty for many. What happens when machines can perform most tasks that humans rely on for their livelihood? What will money and life look like in this new world?
These are valid concerns, and we need to address them proactively – not with panic but with thoughtful consideration and innovative solutions.
In my YouTube channel, I’ve been discussing UBI, AGI, and the future of work with AI replacing up to 100% of all jobs – whether you’re driving a truck or writing that New York Times bestseller.
Today, I’m going to talk about how dividends-based earth stewardship is the key to building a new economy. I believe that optimizing for human happiness is the path forward – because, through automation, we finally have the chance to remove human labor attached to resource creation.
Redistributing Wealth in a Post-Labor Economy
The concept of a post-labor economy is closely tied to the distribution of wealth. As machines take over jobs currently performed by humans, the profits will likely go to a smaller percentage of the population. This concentration of wealth could lead to a widening gap between the haves and have-nots and worsen existing social and economic disparities.
To prevent this from happening, we must reimagine our economic models and find new ways to ensure fairer resource distribution. One concept gaining traction is universal basic income (UBI).
UBI is a recurring payment, distributed universally to every citizen regardless of age, race, gender, and country. It aims to provide a financial safety net in a world without traditional employment.
Unlike welfare, UBI doesn’t require people to sign up for a million programs or qualify through a million troublesome steps to receive payment. It is paid on an individual basis, not per household, and it is unconditional.
UBI: A Stepping Stone, Not a Destination
While UBI offers a potential solution to a post-labor economy, it’s important to view it as a stepping stone rather than a final destination. Simply distributing money without addressing the underlying social and economic structures is unlikely to create a sustainable or fulfilling future.
We must go beyond the basic income model and create a system that provides financial security and fosters purpose and meaning. Think about the role of education, creativity, and community engagement in this new landscape.
Instead of fearing the rise of AI, we should focus on harnessing its power. Let’s use it to enhance our capabilities, promote innovation, and cultivate a more equitable and fulfilling society.
Beyond UBI: Embracing the Creator Economy and Earth Stewardship
Instead of a world where automation renders people obsolete, imagine a society where humans are free to pursue their passions. In this post-work society, individuals can engage in creative endeavors and contribute to their communities in meaningful ways.
The rise of the creator economy shows the potential for individuals to build livelihoods through independent work. People are leveraging platforms and technologies to reach global audiences. Imagine this trend amplified in a world where individuals have more time and resources to invest in their passions.
In this world, the social contract would be redefined. It would prioritize individual growth, community contribution, and environmental stewardship alongside financial well-being.
Instead of simply receiving basic income, individuals could engage in activities that benefit themselves and society. They could participate in environmental restoration projects or contribute to community-based initiatives. People could pursue further education and skills development. These contributions could be rewarded with additional resources or benefits, creating a virtuous cycle of productivity and social good.
Redefining Success in the Age of Abundance
One of the most profound shifts we may experience in a post-labor economy is a redefinition of success. In a world where basic needs are met, the pursuit of material wealth may become less central to our sense of purpose and fulfillment. We may find greater meaning in activities that foster personal growth, social connection, creativity, and the well-being of our planet.
When it comes to human happiness, I have this simple formula. These two things put together equal happiness for the human race.
Number one, time. Without time, we can’t exercise our state of humanity.
And number two, the resources to be able to spend that time doing the thing we really want to do.
I believe that the dividends from the biggest companies in the world that are about to make massive profits from full job automation should be redistributed across humanity. This way we are giving humanity back their time, because now they have the resources to use that time without having to sign up for a job where they feel like they’re selling their soul.
I think that Thomas Paine was right when he portrayed this idea of stewarding the earth and its natural resources and creating a baseline social insurance system that was universal and unconditional.
UBI test pilots have run all across the world in many different scenarios, but we’ve never been able to achieve a grand rollout on a world scale. And because of what automation is about to do in every job, in every industry, we have the chance to reallocate some serious profits into unconditional and universal dividends.
We must optimize not for the most capital, not for the biggest house, not for the most acreage, but for human happiness, which cannot be attached to a price tag, but rather to time.
I think we’re about to enter the greatest age of abundance we’ve ever seen, and I think a dividends-based Earth stewardship is going to be one of the best ways to reallocate the profits that AI brings.
Navigating the Transition: The Role of Education and Adaptation
The transition to a post-labor economy will come with challenges. As certain jobs become automated, workers will need to adapt their skills and embrace new opportunities.
This is where education and reskilling programs will play a crucial role. Governments, educational institutions, and businesses will need to collaborate. Together, they can create accessible and affordable pathways for individuals to acquire new knowledge and skills.
Imagine a world where lifelong learning is not just a buzzword but an integral part of society. In this world, individuals are empowered to continually update their skill sets, explore new fields, and stay ahead of the technological curve.
Preparing for the Unpredictable
The most important skill we can cultivate in the face of such uncertainty is adaptability. Embracing change, being open to new possibilities, and continually learning and evolving will be crucial. We are entering uncharted territory, and there is no roadmap to tell us exactly what the future holds.
With foresight, ingenuity, and a commitment to shared prosperity, we can navigate the transition to a post-labor economy and create a future where everyone has the opportunity to live fulfilling and meaningful lives. Shorter working hours could become the norm as we adjust to a post-work era.
Conclusion
The coming of the post-labor economy isn’t something to fear. It’s something to prepare for thoughtfully. Instead of viewing this transition with dread, we should see it as an opportunity to build a better future.
By rethinking our values, investing in education, promoting innovation, and ensuring equitable access to resources, we can create a post-labor world that benefits all of humanity.
In this world, people and machines will work together, prosperity will be shared, and everyone will have the opportunity to live a life filled with purpose and possibility.
The time to start shaping this future is now. Is your business ready for the new post-AGI economy?
