The AI landscape is shifting dramatically, and another prominent voice has joined the chorus of concerned experts. Miles Brundage, OpenAI’s head of policy research for six years and senior advisor for AGI readiness, has left the company – and his departure speaks volumes about the state of AGI preparedness.

As someone deeply embedded in the AI industry, I can tell you this isn’t just another tech company departure. This is a significant moment that deserves our attention, especially given the pattern we’re seeing of safety researchers leaving major AI labs.

Why This Matters Now: AGI Is Closer Than You Think

Let’s be crystal clear: AGI isn’t some far-off science fiction concept. We’re looking at a potential 2029 timeline – possibly sooner. We’ve already replicated human behavior through robotics and autonomous systems, and we’re rapidly advancing in replicating human intelligence and reasoning.

As Geoffrey Hinton (who left Google in 2023) pointed out, “In the Industrial Revolution, we made human strength irrelevant. Now, in the AGI age, we’re making human intelligence irrelevant.” That’s not just provocative; it’s profound.

The 5 Critical AGI Readiness Gaps (And Why They Matter)

Miles Brundage’s assessment is stark: “Neither OpenAI nor any frontier lab is ready. And the world’s not ready either.” Here are the five critical AGI readiness gaps he’s identified:

1. Lack of Shared Understanding

The most fundamental gap is that stakeholders – from tech companies to governments to the public – don’t have a unified grasp of what AGI is or its implications. I see this firsthand in my speaking engagements. Recently, I met a senior consultant who had never heard of ChatGPT. This knowledge gap is more than concerning; it’s dangerous.

2. Inadequate Regulatory Infrastructure

Our current laws and policies were created for calculators, not superintelligence. We’re trying to govern what could be the most powerful technology ever invented with rules that simply weren’t designed for this purpose. The mismatch is staggering.

3. Legitimacy Crisis

Too many crucial decisions about AGI development happen behind closed doors. While public input is essential, we face a catch-22: How do we meaningfully involve the public when there’s such a vast knowledge gap?

4. Weak Societal Resilience

We’re woefully unprepared for the economic and social disruptions AGI will bring. This isn’t just about job displacement – it’s about a fundamental shift in how society functions when, for the first time in history, labor becomes decoupled from capital.

5. Differential Development

We’re advancing AI capabilities faster than our ability to control them. As Brundage puts it, “We are building a rocket engine we don’t know how to steer.” This imbalance between capability and control is perhaps the most immediate concern.

The Path Forward: From Warning to Action

Despite these challenges, I remain optimistically practical. Here’s what we can do to move towards AGI readiness:

  1. Start with Education: Familiarize yourself with existing AI tools. Even something as simple as using ChatGPT for daily tasks can build valuable understanding.
  2. Embrace Automation Thoughtfully: In my work with First Movers, I see firsthand how automation can transform businesses. Start small, but start now.
  3. Participate in the Conversation: Share knowledge, ask questions, and engage with experts and policymakers about AGI development.
  4. Prepare for Economic Shifts: Understanding how AGI might reshape economic models is crucial. This isn’t about fear-mongering; it’s about practical preparation.

The Glass Half Full Perspective

While these gaps are serious, they also present unprecedented opportunities. With proper implementation, AGI could provide everyone on Earth with a baseline standard of living – something never before possible in human history.

What’s Next?

The exodus of safety researchers from major AI labs signals a crucial moment in AGI development. Whether you’re a business leader, policymaker, or simply someone interested in the future, now is the time to engage with these challenges.

Stay informed, stay engaged, and most importantly, stay proactive. The future of AGI isn’t written yet – we all have a role in shaping it.
