1 billion jobs gone by 2030

Table of Contents

AI job automation is rapidly changing the employment landscape as we know it. It seems every day there’s a new article about a new AI breakthrough. This reality can be both exciting and unsettling for many.

It’s not about robots coming to steal your job. Rather, it’s about understanding how AI job automation will reshape industries and redefine the skills needed to thrive.

The Inevitability of AI in the Workplace

From self-driving cars to AI-powered chatbots that sound eerily human, we are witnessing AI’s transformative potential firsthand. AI job automation is not a far-off futuristic concept, but a pressing reality already changing the employment landscape.

I recommend watching my video on AGI vs. ANI and you’ll see why I think artificial narrow intelligence (ANI) has almost everything we need to automate billions of jobs before we even reach artificial general intelligence (AGI).

I believe that when we enter the age where we have autonomous AI, and even superintelligence, we will enter the greatest age humanity has ever seen — the age of abundance or plentitude.

But first, we have to overcome some giant hurdles.

Back in 2017, five years before ChatGPT came around, McKinsey published this eye-opening study on workforce transitions in a time of automation. We already knew back then that over 50% of all the work that humans do in the workplace can be automated.

In fact, in 6 out of 10 occupations, more than 30% of activities are technically automatable.

And get this: the study predicted that AI will displace 800 million jobs, which is 30% of the entire global workforce, and we’re going to see this happen by 2030.

We’re just six short years away!

If you watch my video on the Age of Plentitude, I believe we’re living on the brink of that new age.

Jobs AI Is Likely to Impact Most

Certain sectors, particularly those heavily reliant on routine tasks or data analysis, are expected to be most affected by AI job automation in the coming years. This doesn’t necessarily mean those jobs will disappear completely but instead will evolve significantly.

Customer Service

Think chatbots, virtual assistants, and increasingly sophisticated self-service platforms. AI can now handle a wide range of customer interactions, resolving issues and answering inquiries.

As AI becomes more adept at understanding natural language and handling complex queries, its presence in customer service roles will only continue to grow.

Transportation

Autonomous driving technology is quickly advancing. Truck drivers, taxi drivers, and even delivery drivers are likely to see the most change in their industry in the near future.

Manufacturing

Robots have played a role in factories for decades, and artificial intelligence will accelerate this trend. AI tools can optimize manufacturing processes, from improving efficiency on production lines to predicting maintenance needs.

Will There Be Enough Work in The Future?

Many people fear that AI adoption will lead to widespread job displacement, leaving millions unemployed. While it’s true that AI will transform the job market, history suggests that technological disruptions tend to create new opportunities alongside the ones they displace.

The Impact of Automation on Labor Demand

Historically, technological advancements have led to increased productivity and economic growth, which in turn have created new industries and jobs.

For example, the Industrial Revolution automated many agricultural tasks, leading to a surge in manufacturing jobs. Similarly, the rise of computers and the internet created countless new jobs in fields like software development, digital marketing, and e-commerce.

AI is likely to follow a similar pattern. While it will automate certain tasks and displace some existing jobs, it will also create new opportunities in areas such as:

  • AI development and maintenance
  • Data science and analytics
  • AI-related consulting and services
  • Content creation and curation

Moreover, AI has the potential to augment human capabilities, enabling us to be more productive and efficient in our work. For instance, AI-powered tools can assist with tasks like data analysis, customer service, and even creative writing.

Upskilling: Your Ticket to a Future-Proof Career

A 2023 ResumeBuilder survey found that 37% of companies using AI already replaced workers, and 44% said AI will lead to layoffs by the end of 2024.

Those stats can feel intimidating, however, they can also be a catalyst for positive change.

The same survey revealed that 96% of companies will be looking for workers with AI skills. So now is the perfect time to focus on acquiring new skills and diversifying your capabilities to make yourself more adaptable.

The more you can upskill and offer new value to employers, the stronger your position. This ensures you will continue to be an asset even as traditional roles evolve with artificial intelligence.

Develop In-Demand Skills

Technical skills, such as coding, data analysis, and AI development, are highly sought-after as businesses adopt AI systems.

But “human” or “soft” skills such as problem-solving, adaptability, creativity, communication, critical thinking, and emotional intelligence are equally valuable in an AI-driven landscape.

Embrace Lifelong Learning

AI job automation will continually change skill requirements, and embracing continuous learning is more critical than ever.

Be proactive and take the time to learn new software. Watch video tutorials about data analysis or investigate AI and machine learning for a start.

Cultivate a Growth Mindset

Adapting to change and embracing new opportunities requires a willingness to expand your knowledge and comfort zone. The more willing you are to explore, fail and learn new things, the more prepared you’ll be for a world where artificial intelligence reshapes traditional roles.

AI: Not a Job Terminator, But a Powerful Tool for Enhancement

I believe that AI will affect jobs in every industry and workplace.

How exactly will that play out? What will the labor market look like?

Fear not, there’s no need to surrender to a robotic takeover. It’s about changing our perspective on work in the digital age.

Instead of viewing AI automation as a threat, look at it as an opportunity to redefine how we work and live. The future holds many possibilities for collaboration and growth.

As many of you know, I used to run a human writing agency and today I work full-time in AI. I was one of the first to jump into the AI writing landscape in early 2023.

Even though I was known as the “anti-AI writer” back in the day, I saw the possibility and turned into a believer when I found a multi-stack brand growth tool — more than one LLM with proprietary, built-in, real-time search tools — that wrote content just as good (and sometimes even better) than a human writer.

I upskilled and changed my job role completely because of what I saw coming in AI. And I’m here sharing how you can do the same.
