The OpenAI o1 model is causing a stir in the tech world. Everyone from seasoned coders to curious marketers is buzzing about this new language model. But is it really a game-changer, or just another flash in the pan? And how does this revolutionary model impact your life and work?
On Sept 12, 2024, OpenAI launched the o1 (Strawberry) model to the public in preview mode. This is a new version of their large language model (LLM).
Strawberry is trained with reinforcement learning to perform complex reasoning on its own. That means you don’t need to prompt it or guide it — it will conduct complex reasoning before it gives you an answer.
What Makes o1 Different?
On the surface, o1 might not seem different from its predecessor, GPT-4. It still generates text, answers questions (even open-ended ones), and remembers conversations.
However, the o1 model spends more time “thinking” before it answers. This AI model employs complex internal reasoning to produce accurate and insightful responses. It represents a big step forward in large language models.

How o1 Uses Reasoning and Chain of Thought
The o1 model uses “chain of thought prompting” to break down problems into smaller steps. It’s like giving the model building blocks to arrange until it finds the best solution. This makes its problem-solving process transparent and human-like, unlike older models.

Is The OpenAI o1 Model AGI?
I’ve been pretty impressed with the o1 results as I prompt it with tough questions. It does really well in three areas: physics, biology, and chemistry — even exceeding human PhD level accuracy.
Now the question on everyone’s mind is, is this AGI?
Even with a chain of thought reasoning and the ability to think by itself before responding, I don’t believe we have reached AGI.
First of all, AGI will have some form of sentience which is the ability to experience feelings and sensations. A robot may be able to simulate a level of sentience pretty much like a human. Cognitive abilities like awareness and emotional reactions play into sentience as well. OpenAI’s o1 does not have this.
While it excels at specific tasks like math, coding, and scientific reasoning, o1 still lacks the common sense understanding of true AGI. For example, it would not be able to understand humor or solve complex social problems.
However, and I made this point in a video on ANI vs AGI, what we’re looking at in the o1 model is an ability that rivals, if not exceeds, most people on the planet.

When I asked o1 how it would build a world government for a post-labor society that would be free, fair for all, and has UBI as a key component, it gave me an answer that was more profound than the majority of people I could go up to and ask today.
In just a few seconds, it was able to conceptualize and map out a world government. And the result was pretty well thought out too.
Here’s a summary of the 10-point system it recommended:
- Establish a global democratic framework
- Implement funding and distribute UBI
- Ensure freedom and fairness with a universal Bill of Rights
- Address post-labor society challenges with support for entrepreneurship
- Promote social cohesion
- Promote economic equity beyond UBI

When o1 eventually rolls out and connects to the Web, it will get 100x better because then it can merge complex reasoning with up-to-date knowledge.
What’s truly impressive to me is the large-scale improvement of o1 from GPT-4 in competition math and competition code. Whereas GPT-4 was only about 11-13% accurate in both areas, o1 got 83.3% in math and 89% in coding!
Remember when the experts predicted that GPT-2 to GPT-3 would take 50 to 80 years? Now we’re looking at a giant leap from GPT-4 to o1 with reasoning. And it will only get better and better because o1 is just in preview mode right now.
