As artificial intelligence rapidly changes the job market, it’s easy to feel anxious about the future. A post-labor society doesn’t seem far off, and questions buzz in our minds.
Will robots replace us entirely?
Instead of viewing AI as a threat, those who can collaborate effectively with these new technologies will be the ones shaping a successful future.
That’s what a future-proof career AI strategy is all about.
You have the power to make yourself more valuable than you ever were before.
This blog post will help you future-proof your career, or even carve out a new path, by focusing on these three main areas:
- Learn how to find meaning in your work.
- Learn how to develop EQ, not IQ.
- Learn how to collaborate effectively with AI.
Preparing for a Post-Labor Society: Discover Your Passion and Strength in an AI World
The fear of robots taking our jobs isn’t exactly new. We saw this happen during the Industrial Revolution and the rise of automation in factories. However, this time feels different because it’s not just manual labor that AI can perform. It can perform tasks that require thinking, learning, and problem-solving.
This is where a significant part of future-proofing your career lies.
The Importance of Meaning in Your Work
There was a video I posted on my YouTube channel a few months back about how I believe the number one most important thing you can do right now in the age of AI is lose a shitty job you never loved. The job that makes you angry on a Monday morning, a job that is slowly killing your creativity, your passion, and your purpose.
If you are in a job you hate, get out.
At the beginning of my career, before I started my human writing agency, I was faced with many doors that shut one after the other and it felt like it was impossible to land a job. But that’s what prompted me to start a business from my passion — writing.
Without those employers saying no, I would not have followed my passion and built a multimillion-dollar writing agency.
So how do you find work that brings you meaning?
You need to find out what lies in these two areas for you: your passion and your strengths.
Here are two simple exercises you can use to uncover your passion and your strengths:
1. Find 5 things you’re incredibly passionate about and narrow it down to the number one thing you love the most.
For me, naturally, it’s writing, and from that came content creation, generating powerful videos for YouTube, educating, and influencing.
2. Find 3 to 5 core strengths. What are areas in which you excel? Are you a natural at explaining complex problems?
Get clear about what truly motivates you. AI excels at repetitive, data-driven tasks. But it still can’t replicate the power of human passion and ingenuity.
Think about it — robots might be able to write a decent marketing copy, but can they come up with groundbreaking marketing strategies? Can they understand the nuances of human emotion and consumer behavior, or create truly engaging narratives? Probably not.
Focus on What AI Cannot Do
Rather than fearing what AI can do, focus on what it cannot do. Cultivate skills that are innately human. By playing to our strengths, we can carve out a space for ourselves in a future where AI is ubiquitous.
Emotional Intelligence and Leadership
AI can process data and identify patterns, but it can’t replicate the nuances of human emotion. It can’t inspire a team or provide genuine empathy. These are the skills that make for effective leadership and relationship building.
By honing your emotional intelligence, you can differentiate yourself in a crowded market and ensure you’re providing something that AI cannot.
Strategic Thinking and Complex Problem Solving
AI excels at optimizing for specific goals, but it lacks the capacity for true big-picture thinking. Humans are still far superior at identifying long-term goals and adapting to unforeseen challenges. Complex problem-solving often requires creativity, intuition, and the ability to connect seemingly disparate ideas. These are all skills that remain uniquely human.
Develop EQ, Not IQ
Why is EQ the new IQ in a post-labor economy? Because we won’t be judged based on our work or productivity anymore. When automation and robots are doing the work for us, we will be judged based on how well we interact with other human beings.
One of the best things you can do is spend time with people and build real rapport.
Since moving to Scottsdale, Arizona, I’ve been going out more to attend local events and spend hours in philosophical conversations with people. I find people willing to talk about the hard stuff, like how unhealthy our school system is, glorified childcare so we can get back to work, and all of the brokenness that came from an era where we were judged based on our productivity and not our humanity.
EQ itself consists of 5 key components:
- Self-awareness
- Self-regulation
- Motivation
- Empathy
- Social skills
With machines rapidly taking over the tasks that we need high-IQ people to do, the remaining human work will be highly focused on emotional intelligence tasks like leadership, negotiation, conflict resolution, and team collaboration.
People with high EQ are incredible at social environments and connecting with others, and they will be in demand to help shape and build parts of our new society.
How do you develop high EQ?
- Work on active listening
- Read a lot
- Practice mindfulness
Collaboration is Key in a Future With AI
Don’t think of AI as competition, think of it as a powerful collaborator. When humans and machines work in synergy, it unleashes a wave of possibilities.
How can you work with AI rather than against it?
In 2021, I sold a $5 million, 100-person writing agency I built from nothing more than $75 — just in time to get ahead of AI.
Today, I run First Movers, a company that helps businesses adapt to AI and stay ahead in the AI revolution. Quite a shift – but it has been worth it. And there are exciting things up ahead!
As AI technology develops, so should our approach to work. Rather than fearing that AI is replacing us, we should explore how we can manage work alongside AI.
Ready to Future-Proof Your Career for AGI?
In a time where artificial intelligence and automation are reshaping industries at breakneck speed, there’s a serious concern out there (and rightfully so) among workers for the future of their careers.
But here’s the truth: you have the power to make yourself MORE valuable than ever before.
One of my favorite quotes is from Gmork in The Never-Ending Story:
“People who have no hopes or dreams are easy to control.”
Your hopes and dreams just got 10x more important.
Remember, the goal is to become so good they can’t ignore you.
A future-proof career AI strategy isn’t about becoming an engineer or coding whiz. It’s about being adaptable, curious, and willing to learn new things. By honing your uniquely human strengths like creativity, critical thinking, and emotional intelligence; embracing continuous learning; and seeing AI as an ally, you’ll not only navigate the future of work but thrive in it.
