We are on the verge of something extraordinary – humanity’s final invention.
That invention? Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).
AGI promises to reshape our world in ways we’re just beginning to grasp. We are headed into a jobless society where we will have global dematerialization. And when automation replaces human labor, capital itself will have to change.
AGI isn’t some distant sci-fi fantasy; it’s a fast-approaching reality.
What does this future hold?
AGI: Humanity’s Last Invention?
Imagine a convergence of automation, AI, and robotics operating at warp speed —this is the essence of AGI. It represents a point where machines achieve cognitive abilities on par with humans.
Some experts even believe that it will exceed human performance and lead to the development of artificial superintelligence (ASI), an intelligence far more advanced than humans.
If it lives up to the hype, AGI could revolutionize scientific discovery, ushering in groundbreaking advancements in fields like medicine and technology.
Imagine AGI developing life-extending therapies or pioneering new energy sources. These advancements could significantly impact the human trajectory as we know it.

But how close are we really to AGI becoming a reality?
A Glimpse into the Future: Exploring the AGI Timeline
Researchers estimated various timelines for AGI, with some believing AGI could arrive as early as the next few years. Here’s my year-by-year breakdown of a potential AGI timeline.
2024: Laying the Groundwork
While full AGI isn’t expected this year, 2024 is about significant advancements. We’ve already seen strides in large language models (LLMs) such as OpenAI’s o1 which is now capable of reasoning.
This fall we will see more humanoids. Back in March, we saw the world’s first commercially built humanoid partner with OpenAI to enable human-like conversations.
We also saw the Tesla bot Optimus Gen 2 get better and better to the point where it can lift weights and even fold laundry. For reference, in December 2022 the Optimus couldn’t even walk across the stage without falling!
Agility Robotics also partnered with Amazon in 2023 to test how humanoids could perform repetitive tasks and work collaboratively with employees.
This spring, we saw leaps and bounds in humanoids and I can see more of them rolling into warehouses this fall to augment human workers.
If you want a full picture of where this can go, all you need to do is watch Will Smith’s iRobot which paints a pretty uncanny picture of how much humanoids could permeate humanity and the workforce.
2025: Refining Benchmarks and Enterprise Adoption
Defining and measuring artificial intelligence accurately will be key in 2025. We can anticipate breakthroughs in AI evaluation methods that offer more reliable insights into machine intelligence.
With clearer benchmarks established, expect a surge in enterprise adoption as companies feel more confident about the technology’s reliability.
Problems like hallucinations in LLMs prevent huge verticals right now, like the medical industry, from fully embracing AI. But as GPT-5 comes out and these hallucinations are fixed, we could see more enterprises trust AI.
In 2025, I think we will also see a surge in hiring people who are AI optimizers, AI drivers, and AI operators. If your job is at risk of getting replaced by a robot, the time to upskill is now.
2026: Industry Integration and the Dawn of the AGI Dialogue
2026 could be the year when AI becomes deeply intertwined with various industries. LLMs will likely reach new heights with potential releases like GPT-6 and Claude 5, improving accuracy and functionality.
We’re going to see smart home integration directly with AI, and AGI will be part of our daily conversation.
2027: A Potential Turning Point
2027 is the earliest year I believe that we will have AGI. This timeframe is frequently cited by technologists like Ray Kurzweil and founders like Elon Musk, Sam Altman, Dario Amodei, and Mark Zuckerberg as a potential window for AGI’s arrival.
Here’s where it gets interesting: OpenAI, in their documents on superintelligence, talks about ASI as if it will be here by 2027 — skipping the entire AGI timeline.
This begs the question (and I’ve seen this in so many forums and even my own YouTube channel), have these huge companies like OpenAI, Microsoft, and Google actually uncovered AGI? Are they just keeping it under wraps until society is ready before they drop something that could cause total market collapse and the rebirth of society itself? Why is OpenAI talking about ASI as if AGI doesn’t exist? Or is “superintelligence” a word that they use to define AGI?
Only time will tell.
2028: Figuring Out AGI
2028 will be the year that governments have to figure out AI. In the US, this is particularly crucial because it’s an election year.
We’re going to see a complete shift in the job market — potential mass layoffs — so regulatory bodies have to figure out what to do with potential mass homelessness.
There’s going to be geopolitical tension unlike any other time and we’re going to need to do a mass societal transition from a traditional labor economy to a jobless society.
We need to talk about this now and not wait for 2028 to roll around. My hope is that world governments come together with smart technology leaders, founders, authors, and innovators so we can bring together the brightest minds on this planet to build this new society.
We already have clues going all the way back to the 1700s on how we can adapt a stewardship-based approach that would make UBI work across the world for the first time in history.
2029: Navigating a Quantum Leap
If the 2027-2028 predictions prove accurate, 2029 might be a pivotal year as humanity grapples with the full impact of AGI on a global scale.
Economically, we could see major job displacement as automation becomes even more sophisticated.
Some technologists predict significant advancements in quantum computing and nuclear fusion by 2029. This is the year in which we will likely have gigantic data centers, longevity escape velocity, cybernetics, mass robot integration, and technology that merges humans and AI.
This could be the year we finally see Rosie The Robot from The Jetsons come into our homes!
2030 and Beyond: An Age of Superintelligence
Fast forward to 2030, a year by which many predict our world will be fundamentally different. Think widespread adoption of robotics not only in industrial settings but in homes as well.
Perhaps even more intriguing is the potential emergence of ASI by 2030.
ASI, by definition, surpasses our current comprehension and may even be responsible for defining its intelligence to us, making it akin to a form of alien intelligence.
The Time to Prep for AGI is Now
So there you go, an entire timeline to AGI.
The AGI timeline presents both exhilarating opportunities and challenges. If the predictions prove true, it’s possible that within a few short years, AGI, and subsequently ASI, could fundamentally change the world.
These are uncharted waters, but one thing’s for sure: understanding the potential AGI timeline is the first step to navigating its transformative impact.
What can we expect as we get closer to the future?
I predict we’re going to see a very messy rollout — in some instances, humans might not even know what to do when AGI arrives.
So my call to action to legislators, innovators, and founders is let’s work together to figure out the foundation of a new society where universal basic income could be mainstream and we as a human race — no matter our age, race, belief system, political party, accessibility to resources — all get to benefit from AI.
I hope that, just like me, your eyes are open to the future ahead of us. It’s my belief that if just 1% more of the human race were aware of what’s coming, we would have a more optimistic adaption everywhere.
